Unhappy Clogged Duct

Hi,

I have a clogged duct now for about a week and a half. It was as big as a golf ball and so tender. Did massage and heat and lecithin and it is down to the size of a apricot pit. I have managed to make it go away but it just comes right back. I have 5 children and have nursed for 13 years straight with only a 9 month break while I was pregnant with my last baby who is 16 months old. Any advice??

Re: Clogged Duct

Wow - I have nowhere near that amount of experience

I had plugged ducts a few times (but fortunately never mastitis) - I would change nursing bras halfway thru the day, putting on a different style that didn't have the same pressure points. I'd nurse dd in different positions. Hmm that is all I can think of at the moment.

Re: Clogged Duct

Mine never get that big, they just automatically turn to mastisis's (sp?) and I get the fever and chills. I would call a lactation consultant. Also when you nurse, have your baby's chin point towards the lump.

Definitely call a lc or an LLL leader.

Also check out the LLL website for more info. They have a good section on plugged ducts.

Re: Clogged Duct

I don't know the particulars, but I know someone in a nursing group I was in was told to heat a glass jar with hot water, and then stick a butter knife across the top? when the glass has been heated, dump the water and put the jar over your nipple area. I guess the heat creates a vacuum of sorts, and helps clear a blocked duct. I have never tried this, though.

One thing I did that helped with comfort, though, is cabbage leaves. I know it sounds strange, but if you chill cabbage leaves, and stick them in your bra, it helps bring down the swelling. It helps a lot with the pain and heat!!

HTH! Feel better and good luck!

Re: Clogged Duct

Thanks everyone. I have a call out to a Naturpath that my midwife recommended. The babies chin is always pointing in the direction of the lump. It seems to have gotten bigger in the past two days, stress ( car problems that may cost big $$$)and not sleeping well, probably hasn't helped. I've read that not sleeping well can lead to a clogged duct. The baby is in bed with us and she has been doing some pretty bad teething with four teeth. The don't bother her during the day, but she tosses and turns at night. I'll let you know what the naturpath has to say.

Thanks again!!
Peace,
Cindy

I am not sure about the cabbage leaves I have heard they will dry your milk up. But I have no experience so don't take my word for it.

Hope you find some relief soon.

I had no problem with change of supply when using the cabbage leaves, but I can't vouch for anyone else.

Re: Clogged Duct

I've had clogged ducts the first time it came back 4 times in one week, then 1 month later my Ds decided to bite me while nursing (NO TEETH YET) and by the next morning i was clogged again! I do the lecithin but, if you don't take enough it doesn't help....are you taking 1200mg pills? When i have a clog i take 1 1200mg 4 times a day for like a week. Also for a hot compact i don't know what your using but my LC suggested a sock full of rice and put it in the micro for like 1+ minutes until it's warm it stays warm for quiet a while. Also get alot of rest, I know everytime i get clogged i start to feel really worn out and tired...just take your Dc to bed with you, turn out the lights, close the curtain, put the covers over your head and try to forget about the Car and money troubles (I know how you feel, i drove my car to Walmart when my son was 1 week old and the engine blew...i haven't driven in 4 months and i only get to leave the house for dr. apts, wic apts, and grocery shopping.....i'm going nuts in this house). I hope things get better!!!
