Defining EC for people who haven't heard of it.
EC stands for Elimination Communication and it means just that- communicating with your baby about their elimination needs. This is done through observing your baby for sign that they need to go (squirming, grimacing, farting, etc), offering your baby the potty at appropriate times (upon waking, after eating), cueing your baby to go by a sound (psss) and association (the potty), and intuition.
There are some better explanations: Aletheia Quote:

Niiiiice
Thanks for that!To us, EC is a way of keeping in touch, keeping clean. I find that I 'miss' the most when I'm distracted with something--housework, the Internet, etc--and it's a nice reminder to take a step back from everything and be more in the moment... because I can spend the moment catching a pee, or I can spend it cleaning up a diaper/carpet mess. To me it's all about remembering what's most important and where my priorities are. Yes, there are times when DS is in a diaper because I NEED to get things done, but I find that we are both happier when I let him run naked and just connect with him.

Re: Defining EC for people who haven't heard of it.
When people ask me about EC, I direct them to the tribalBaby web site (http://www.tribalbaby.org/ECindex.html). I love the simplicity of the explanation. It shows how easy and natural it can be.
From Tribal baby: In a nutshell, Elimination Communication is about the Communication. It is about helping your baby to go 'to the toilet' somewhere other than a nappy, some of the time, then more of the time as they grow! |

Re: Defining EC for people who haven't heard of it.
I EC'd my first child (boy) from 8 months old (we were considered "late-starters"). We had immediate successes but encountered the expected challenges of trying to UN-train a baby that had been diapered-trained for 8 months.
I EC'd my second baby from BIRTH and I HIGHLY recommend trying to catch those very first pees/poops (meconium). Do not be intimidated. You are responding to your baby's instinct to eliminate away from where they lie and reinforcing their natural desire to stay dry and clean. Every day you and your baby will learn more about each other's timing, needs and signals (as long as you are consistant). By 1 to 2 months old we are able to catch 100% of our daughter's poops/pees (IF, I'm attentive, that is). It's hard to be THAT attentive but she is willing if I am able! Making a cue sound has become mostly unneccesary. It's just expected of me (to take her diaper off to "go"). Good Luck to ALL!!

Re: Defining EC for people who haven't heard of it.
This is not what I thought it was
My LO is just over 6 mo, but I think I want to try this (when at home of course!) I don't know what DH will think (just another nutty idea mommy has maybe) but I think this is a [I]fabulous[I] idea! What a way to bond with your child - learn better communication AND help keep messes to a minimum! Thanks for the info everyone!
