Are there any safe lice shampoos for breastfeeders?

My LO got lice from daycare, and upon checking, he gave it to his mama too. Is there a prescription or OTC shampoo that I can use? I'm still mainly exclusively breastfeeding, LO still gets some solids every few days.

Right now I have my hair soaked in olive oil and wrapped in saran wrap and a towel because I didn't know wth else to do. And I don't think it's working because I'm freaking itchy under the towel, but that could be psychosomatic too. But I don't know if I can do this every day, because I have to work, I'm calling in to work tomorrow so we can finish vacuuming the van and couches and doing all the laundry, but I can't miss much more then that, which is why just a shampoo would be loverly.

I'm majorly, majorly sqeamish about lice, so this is freaking hard to deal with.

I never knew lice shampoo would be unsafe for bfers! learn something new everyday!!... why don't you dye your hair with something ridiculously strong? Or if you have a friend who is willing when i got lice BAD as a child, my aunt went stand by stand and pulled all the critters off, eggs and all. took a couple hours.. ok all day-- but they were gone, and my scalp wasn't burned.

I've heard dog flea shampoo works well. Kills the head lice, yet does'nt harm the scalp.

Re: Are there any safe lice shampoos for breastfeeders?

When we were growing up in some sort of island country of some sort everytime we got lice, grandma would take regular shampoo and put in a lot of salt. She'd then put that mixture in our hair and let it sit for about 20 mins. we'd rinse it out, and she'd then put us under the hair dryer (in low heat) for about 15 mins and repeat. she'd do this a couple times for a couple of days and it got rid of them.

apparently the hair dryer is supposed to help get the lice to come out of the eggs so that the shampoo salt solution can kill it.

oh! and PS. we didn't get lice a lot because we were filthy children I have over 50 cousins in my moms side alone and someone, somewhere always managed to catch it from their skool and give it to the rest of us. call it the daycare syndrome.

Oh I know, actually lice cant live on dirty hair, which is sucky but interesting. I'll try the salt & heat thing bc I'm wary of chemicals while nursing

oh mama i am ss you are going through this! to prevent it i always use a grease in my boys' hair before going to school.. they have thick dark hair so it just looks shiny, not dirty. when we got it from school before, i shampoo (rid or nix) and shave the head. i have a severe lice phobia so i do everything overboard. tto is suppose to help repel the buggers, too... gl!! bak'ing- sorry so short and choppy...

Just wanted to point out for other people to learn too: lice shampoos have pesticides, which have been shown that they DO leach into the breastmilk, so lice shampoo + nursing = giving baby poisons

I'm forgoing the nix because further googling shows that even though it's the safest, it still does happen in small amounts, so I'm doing nightly oil drowns.
