Re: OK, I'm about to stp CD-ing......

I have/had stink issues too.
Mine were b/c of the MF inserts (the diapers don't smell)
I do a soak w/baking soda of ONLY the inserts, then drain/spin
Then add diapers for cold soak/hot wash + extra rinse routine.
Sometimes I wash the inserts separately w/a tiny bit of bleach.

I also have hard water DON'T use vingear b/c of that.

Re: OK, I'm about to stp CD-ing......

Have you tried stripping 'em? All F&C has the UV brighteners that can cause build up. Maybe take all the dipes and do a squirt of Dawn and run until you see no bubbles...and then take the inserts and BOIL em, again with some Dawn...

Wow. I'm not even CDing yet and I'm picking up on it. Hopefully you figure it out soon!

I thought you weren't supposed to use the free&clear detgs. I've seen quite a few mamas who had sting that went away when they started using a harsher detg.

Re: OK, I'm about to stp CD-ing......

I know you've gotten alot of advice but I'll throw in what I do. I never have a stink problem except for morning diapers but after 12 hours anyone would stink .

Cold soak and rinse with baking soda.
Hot wash/cold rinse with Charlie's Soap and every three to four washes add 1 tbsp of vinegar and occasionally vinegar and baking soda to wash cycle.
Hang dry any pockets or AIOS; dry fitteds on low setting and then hang dry the rest of the way; dry prefolds completely in dryer; hang dry all covers.

HTH! Don't quit, just change detergents to see if it helps!

Re: OK, I'm about to stp CD-ing......

I'm going through the same thing, and got a lot of helpful suggestions on my thread over the weekend (I think we need a stickied stinky-dipe support group thread ). I finally broke down and tried a little bleach with half my inserts, and figured at least that would do it--but ds was stinky this morning again! Ugh.

So, now I'm thinking something about our medium-hard water is just not allowing things to get rinsed out properly. I'm running a load with an RLR ball right now, and the washer has a TON of suds--I've never had that when stripping with vinegar or hot water, or anything. I'm wondering if that's detergent residue, or if the RLR is just really sudsy, and now I have RLR buildup . I'll report back if this is the miracle cure.

Has your softener salt been refilled, or whatever it is you do with a softener lately? I've been considering a softener to solve our problem, so it's disheartening to hear you're having the same problem even with a softener/

PS--Why so many suggestions that vinegar is a no-no in hard water? I've always read that it's works as a water softener in hard water, and helps get residue out.

Re: OK, I'm about to stp CD-ing......

I read that if the water is too hard that the vinegar causes more harm than good.

I use the oxyclean in my hot wash/soak (after a cold rinse), every week or so I put a squirt of dawn original in the washer to strip the dipes. And I only use Sport Wash or washing soda & simple green (I like to alternate). I also have SUN detergent but havent used it yet.

since using Allen's Naturally, we don't have stink problems.

I've heard that washing soda and simple green work GREAT

Re: OK, I'm about to stp CD-ing......

Thank you, thank you!!!

Ok, so I am going right now to find some Allen's Natural online to use instead of the All Free and Clear. I am going to print this page and try every last suggestion you guys gave. I want to use my cloth so bad, so I will just have to do my best to get this worked out. Thanks again, I really appreciate it!

Someone told me to soak in Borax overnight and that got rid of my stink. I have got to find some of that sensiclean or sportwash!

Piping in about the F&C...it's horrid for your diapers! Get something nice and harsh, like Purex (the original one), Era, Tide...they get your dipies clean, no stink.
