Help what decongestant can I take?
My sinuses are killing me and I would like to take a decongestant to relieve some of the pressure I am feeling in my face. I know you aren't really supposed to take decongestants while breastfeeding but I am desperate. DD is 14 months but still loves to nurse so I don't want to cause her a huge issue. Is there anything I can take to help relieve this terrible pressure. I have a sinus infection. I started antibiotics last night but obviously they aren't working just yet.
Thanks

Re: Help what decongestant can I take?
I don't have any at home, but check the symptoms for ALAVERT. That's the only medicine that my LC told me was completely safe to take during BFing. I can't remember if it has a decongestant in it though.

Re: Help what decongestant can I take?
have you heard of a neti pot?
I have several friends that swear by them-http://www.healingdaily.com/exercise/neti-pot.htm I would stay away from decongestants personally due to the drop you will experience in supply

I have been taking tylenol but it doesn't help with the sinus pressure.

Re: Help what decongestant can I take?
You can use many nasal sprays safely since they don't really enter the bloodstream or digestive stream.
I also suggest just some good spicy cooking. I can't take anything since I'm nursing and I get sinus infections every time because my nasal passages don't drain correctly (I usually can't even blow my nose, and never have a runny nose, it just backs up in there until it gets infected, and eventually drains into my lungs and throat, so if I don't head it off I end up with bronchitis or a sore throat) So now when I get sick, I get some good spicy shahi paneer, some ginger tea, because regardless that gets my nose running every time It helps quite a bit actually.

Re: Help what decongestant can I take?
try some warm/hot compresses on your face to relieve sinus pressure. I would try a humidifier and steam and saline nose spray. That is really it if you want to only do natural things
![]() ETA - spicy stuff is a good idea. Try take out from a Thai place - Coconut soup its yummy

Re: Help what decongestant can I take?
You can take sudafed on a short-term basis but watch your supply. It doesn't necessarily hurt the baby but it might hurt your supply. Though I will warn you that when i took it when nursing my ds, he got HYPER!!
I second the neti pot/sinus rinse suggestion. I use the Sinus Rinse Kit by Neil med (you can get it at walgreens) and it knocks sinus infections out without the need for decongestants or antibiotics. Just make sure to use warm distilled water and don't do it right before bed.

Re: Help what decongestant can I take?
I have terrible allergies, especially to tree pollen, so a few weeks ago when I was stuffed up like you wouldn't believe I broke down and took sudafed. I know we're all different, but I took that stuff for about a week straight and my supply was not affected in the least bit.
