Re: Our ped gave DS a vaccine against my wishes, pls help me draft a letter (long)

I would definitely write a letter, addressing your complaint. That should help the office enforce the consent-practice.

I wouldn't file a case if u are uncomfortable with it - thinking she may lose her job, etc. if u are going to feel guilty about that - kwim... Filing a case is not going to take the vax back anyway. He's had it, so now just focus on a plan in case he gets CP. But really, with having to leave town, etc. your kids are going to be a little off whack anyway, so why add stress by worrying about it.

My brother got CP at 6mos. (at the same time I got it at 5 yrs) and was v.miserable. At least now u know that is one less thing he has to go to the Dr. to get a vax for. HTH

I told him NO they are allergic to it.

I would be SO mad if i was in your shoes.... I was a MA before having my kids and I know that it's just good ethics to let a patient know what you are doing BEFORE you do it. She should have taken responsiblity as WELL as the DR.
I do pretty much the same thing with penicillin. I'm not deathly allergic but I am allergic. And so is my brother and father and a whole bunch of his family...it's a big family allergen. When they ask if she has any medicine allergies I say we don't know but possibly penicillin...if it ever came up that she needed an antibiotic I would say no to any penicillin or penicillin related antibiotics.

To the OP. Good luck with your letter and I agree that I would make a complaint. Especially with the nurse having such a horrible attitude and being rude to you about it. Hopefully they learn from this mistake.

Re: Our ped gave DS a vaccine against my wishes, pls help me draft a letter (long)

Well, I called and left a message yesterday (I think the office was closed for the late afternoon, hence the phone message). I requested to speak with the physician we saw at the appt. I also sent two copies of the letter (one to them, one to the main office), certified mail.

I would hope I will hear something this week....will keep you all posted

oh, and the only thing I added to the letter I posted earlier was a line stating "This situation needs to be documented in xx's medical records to show this vaccine was given due to an error in the clinic." That sentence was added by recommendation of an old friend I finally got a hold of who works as a pediatric nurse

Thanks for your help mamas!

So sorry that happened to your little one.

I'm not sure if this has been mentioned since I didn't read all the responses, but I would ask that the nurse/medical assistant be disciplined and also that I be informed of what type of disciplinary action she receives. If you did not sign to give consent, they could be in a heap of trouble.

Calling is good but a letter makes good documentation.

Of course, I know that would be very rare, but all the same, I feel like a written letter carries more weight than a phone call...plus, I have control over what I say in a letter than sometimes I can lose in a phone call.
I agree with you momma.
Could you maybe call the office and find out the names of the nurse and dr who you saw? It would help. I would also consider sending a copy to the college of physicians and surgeons (If the Dr didn't make the nurse aware or told her to do it anyway the responsibilty also lies with her) as well as the Board of nursing. It is very serious and should be taken as such. Just because it happens (frequently, I am sure) doesn't make it right.
