Why does he rub his ear all the time?

My DS is 7 months old and for about 2-3 months ago he started to rub his ear (only the right one). We though it could be an ear infection, but our ped. checked it and said that his ear looks fine. What else can it be? Maybe teething?

It could be teething. My son does the same thing. Our dr. said that lo's can't tell where the pain is because of where it is located and the pressure so it helps to rub the ears. My son is still doing it and he is 16 months now.

Our DD has is 5 1/2 months old and since about 3 months old, she does that when she is tired. One of the books I read said for some kidddos that is their kind of sign language. Also, it could be teething, but if he doesn't seem in pain, you might see if it correlates with tiredness.

My 7 month old started doing this too! I took her to the pedi cause I thought she had an ear infection, but she didnt. Now I noticed she does it when she is tired.

Glad to hear this! My dd is 6 mo and has been pulling at her right ear for about a month... it is definitely more when she's tired... I was wondering about an ear infection too, but maybe it is just the tired and teething thing... hate to visit the ped for nothing... she doesn't have any other symptoms so maybe it is just normal for her too...

Re: Why does he rub his ear all the time?

He may do it for no good reason whatsoever. My brother would always rub his left ear when he sucked his thumb. When my parents told him he needed to stop sucking his thumb he replied, "But my ear will get cold!" Sometimes kids just have wacky quirks.

DS ALWAYS rubbed his left ear when he got tired. Sometimes that was the only way we knew he was tired!!

My son does it when he's sleepy, also when he is teething. Babes can get referred ear and jaw pain when teething and will pull on their ears. It's a good idea if your not sure to get him checked out...as recurring ear infections can lead to problems.

Re: Why does he rub his ear all the time?

My son started doing that when he was younger maybe around that age and it was a thing he did when he was sleepy. His grandmother thought he had an ear infection but I noticed he only did it when he was sleepy. Then, when I took the pacifier, he stopped pulling his ear.

Re: Why does he rub his ear all the time?

My dd is 14 months and has always done this. She does it more often if she is tired or cranky. I can't tell you how many times I have taken her to the doc to check her ears and they have been fine every time. If her finger nails get to long she even manages to scratch the inside of her ears so they bleed.
