First Birthday Stories

My little guy's first birthday is on the 19th and I was just curious to know what other mamas did for their little ones first birthday. Any special gift, or keepsake to make a memory? We are having a small party with close friends and family. Please share

I didn't do it, but a friend did...she took a 4x6 picture with a large mat around it and had everybody sign it with a little message then framed it. I wish I did that for dd1's 1st birthday, but I will for her 2nd and obviously for dd2's 1st b-day.

Im watching this thread, as my dd's 1st is on Tuesday~! Man... I cant believe its here already

One idea that I've heard, passed on to other mothers and not yet done for my kids is:

keep a pad and paper for each kid and every time you have that though "I need to write this down" then you just jot down enough key words that you will remember it. Then, on that child's birthday, sit and write them a letter. Start it with something like "You are one year old today and these are some of my most favorite memories of the past year" Then you write out all of those stories and start again for the next year. I've also heard of keeping a big manila envelope to put keepsakes in for each year.

Time capsule was the best idea.

We got one of those big cardboard tubes (just happened that my mom got a sample from the post it company because they make huge post it notes, and they mailed it in a tube, you might wanna go there and look, to see where you might be able to buy big post it notes lol) anyway, We got everyone to write a little something or draw a little picture.. ETC, and we put that in the tube, along with some of the decorations, or napkins we had, and we will open it on her 10th birthday. I want to get some pictures for it of the party, but I haven't gotten them devloped yet (don't laugh she's only 26 months old. lol)

I don't bury it, it just gets buryed in the garage.

We did a big party with mainly family. I had everyone bring sealed envelopes with letters to ds to be read when he is 18 or 20 (I forget which LOL). People from out of town sent some too. They are all put away in a first birthday box that I included some items from his 1st b-day, along with some special keepsakes from his first year. (coming home outfit, day of birth newspaper, etc). This way no matter what happens in coming years, he will get some words of love and wisdom from those that love him at a time that he will be old enough to appreciate it.

we went to dennys for dinner.........we got a few new toys for ds, but that was it, no cake, nothing special. he isnt even eating solids much anyway.

I made a special carrot cake (healthy and baby-approved!) for her. It was so good that everyone ended up eating the carrot cake instead of the store bought cake! I posted the recipe once ages ago in the kitchen forum.

Um...I took special care filling out the 1 year bday part of her baby book. I made her a birthday diaper. But no special gifts.

ETA: ROFL...I used the word special a lot up there! I guess it was a pretty special day. LOL

thank you mamas! i LOVE LOVE LOVE the letter writing idea! How wonderful to be able to read back through those later when your babies are grown!
