Re: Bad night. Scared for ds. Prayers/Positive Thoughts Please.

when we took my boys to their 6 month appt the dr had concerns about jonas' soft spot too (though she didn't actually tell us about it!! ) i couldn't even feel where it was open AT ALL. it had always been small, especially compared to his twin brother (its so hard not to compare when you have 2 the same age). anyway, i was FREAKING OUT, as i know you are too. the dr had me take him for x-rays. remember, we couldn't feel any opening, but the x-rays showed everything to be fine. i know it is scary, but try not to worry until you know there is something wrong. i know how hard that is though.

as far as his eating habits, it does sound like he needs to see a specialist. i agree that kids grow at their own rate, and that it does take a wide range of 'normal' to make an average, my micah is one of those kids! he has always been a slow grower, and had reflux with the puking that you are describing. but--he pretty much stayed on his own growth curve, which btw, was not on "the chart". he had the drs worried, and me for while until i learned to trust myself. i think you have already reached that point though, am i right?

i know you said he gets rice in his bottles, but are you also spooning it to him? if he is screaming about eating from a spoon (if he is actually spoon feeding), then maybe take a break from that. the rice doesn't have more calories than formula, so it would be better to get him to take more formula, though i know you said that was a struggle too. i like the pp suggestion of 2 oz at a time. can you try that? small frequent meals are best for reflux babies anyway, so it might be worth a try.

you might also want to try a soy or hypoallergenic formula, or breastmilk from a milk bank. it is pasturized, like cow milk is. i know in my situation, part of the problem was dairy intolerance. i had to cut all dairy from my diet, and saw an almost instant change. the other thing that helped significantly was taking him to the chiropractor. i know, you are thinking "what?? are you crazy??" but seriously, he did not twist and scrack my baby! adjustments are made using massage and gentle stretching. i highly recommend chiropractic care for reflux.

how did he react when you started him on the reglan? micah experienced the hyperactivity side effect, couldn't sleep, screaming. it was awful. i have a friend who took it to increase her milk supply and she ended up in the ER with side effects from that. it *can* be a scary drug, so pay attn to his behavior. if he seems jittery or restless, well, you understand. neither of the drugs micah tried helped him, zantac did nothing. we gave it 2 weeks, and called it quits on that one. then it was the reglan fiasco. anyway, that's my experience, take from it what you can.

i can relate to your frustration over not giving enough attn to the other kids because adrian needs so much care right now. i felt that way too. i was always tending to micah, cleaning up the puke (an endless chore )and trying to make him comfortable, and jonas would be sitting in a bouncy or something else. i felt so bad, but what can you do? he needs you, and while the others do too, im sure they will be just fine. think of it as them learning how to entertain themselves, or learning independence.

i sure hope you find some answers. and sorry about poor niko's head. when it rains, it pours, right? keep us updated.

Oh momma I am so sorry that you are going through all of this at once
My ds has reflux too, we are on zantac though. did the dr think about trying different medicines? What kind of formula is he on? We are bottle feeding her too, so no flames from my way Maybe he just doesnt like that formula or it hurts him too badly? I have seen much improvements in my ds since he went on soy formula. it seems like the milk based didnt help his situation any. We put the medine in the bottle, it seems to help. I also feed him sitting straight up or else he freaks out! And when he is done his bottle he freaks out again! So I usually give him the pacifier right away, I told the dr that I did that, and she said it might help him soothe himself because of the pain from eating with the reflux but it works here! the excersaucer has been a life saver here recently, and we have a booster chair that reclines a bit, but not as much as the bouncy. And also the bumbo. We have steered clear from any toys that lay you down more and that has seemed to help with the freaking out (ie. swing, boucy, playmats) Hope you are able to find out what works for your little man, so you can get a little break. I also found that if I put the cereal in the nightime bottle that helps, and we are only doing ready to feed now, bc the powered made him worse and during the day I just feed him more often and that seems to work too. Sorry for the ramblings I just hope something might help you

I would set up a specialist appt. I just read about a little boy w/ a cond. where his soft spot closed early, and it was important that they caught it early, but very treatable. Also, doctors often give you the worst case scenario to cover themselves. We went through this w/ our dd, and she is fine today, despite their dire prognostications. Prayers for you.

Sorry that you are dealing with all of this. It's no fun and especially when everything seems to happen at once. I would get him in right away. You and your family will be in my prayers!

God Bless you and your Family

Re: Bad night. Scared for ds. Prayers/Positive Thoughts Please.

I'm so sorry you are going through this.

Annaya is only at the 3rd percentile for weight and she has had no reflux/feeding issues. She is currently being seen by a metabolic specialist to see if there is some underlying problems.

I agree that you should try to get Adrian seen sooner, even if for your own peace of mind, I know the waiting can take a toll on a mama's heart.

I'll say a prayer for you and your littlest boy as well as for your two older sons (as a mom of 4 boys, I've had to deal with more than my share of bumps, bruises, glueings, and stitches).

Best of luck!

Re: Bad night. Scared for ds. Prayers/Positive Thoughts Please.

My 4yr old son Nathaniel has hydrocephalus(water on the brain), and he wasn't diagnosed till he was a year old. He had a lot of growth issues also, but once he was diagnosed and had his surgery his weight just started shooting up. Never had any issues with reflux, but if your son does have any neurological issues I know from personal experience it can have an effect on growth.

If your son has the condition where the soft spot closes early it does require surgery to correct but I believe it's just the one. My sil's best friend had this issue with her son and he's doing fine now, had the surgery a few years ago. I agree with seeing if you can schedule an appt. with a specialist sooner however, Nathaniel's neurosurgeon has always told us if we ever suspect anything is wrong with his shunt to make an appt right away and they'll see us, that they trust the parents intuition about their children.

Re: Bad night. Scared for ds. Prayers/Positive Thoughts Please.

I know when I was a baby on formula, I used to scream and scream and then spit up forcefully. My mom said she switched me to soy and it helped I think.

My younger DS was very sensitive to medicine. If I gave him a liquid medicine he would gag loudly then throw up. Prevacid makes a dissolving pill that worked great for him.
