Brayden fell down a flight of stairs!
I swear that child is doing to keep me on my toes as long as I live!!
We normally have a baby gate at the top of the stairs going down into the basement (where we live at in my parent's house) at all times. It's on hinges and it's always closed. Well, yesterday morning DH gets up with Brayden and his diaper had leaked. He went upstairs to change him, and forgot to lock the gate behind him. I'm still down in our bedroom trying to get Jessica out of bed. All of a sudden I hear this banging noise, and I know instantly what it is. I run from the bedroom and watch Brayden roll down the stairs. It was like it was happening in slow motion, and I was motionless. In reality I've probably never moved that fast, but it was only fast enough to meet him at the bottom of the stairs. I scooped him up as fast as I could, both of us crying hysterically. Within seconds everyone in the house is in the basement. My mother later told me that she woke up from a dead sleep because I was screaming and she doesn't even remember going down two flights of stairs. She said, "it was like the primal cry of a mother animal." I didn't even know I was screaming, but I can still hear it in my head. Luckily he was fine. Very shaken up, but only a few bruises. I think the worst thing for me was that the stairs are open completely open with only slats, no wall. I could see him, but couldn't get to him. I've never felt so helpless! I later told my mother that it was the worst experience I'd had since becoming a mother, and she said it was the worst experience since SHE had become a mother. And I felt so sorry for DH!! My first reaction was instant anger. I wanted to strangle him!! But as soon as I saw how upset he was I felt bad for him. I knew he felt so guilty. One thing's for sure though...we won't forget to lock that gate again.

Re: Brayden fell down a flight of stairs!
Oh my goodness how scary!! I'm glad Brayden is okay! And you're right, your DH won't ever forget to lock it again, I'm sure! Accidents happen though. Brayden's okay, that's all that matters!

Re: Brayden fell down a flight of stairs!
geez mama ...thats awful...I was lucky the other day..I had gone upstairs to get my clothes and I accidently left the family room gate open and my ds was in the family room (the gates keephim in the family room ) I'm throwing on my clothes and the next thing I realize is my ds is at my feet laughing ....he only 10 months old!! My heart skipped abeat cuz I just realized he climbed up my huge flight of stairs by himself without anyone there and he could have rolled down just like your son!! Thats my biggest fear and I never leave that gate open again!!

Re: Brayden fell down a flight of stairs!
Welcome to the age of toddlers
No, seriously, I am so sorry. That is one of my biggest fears now that dd is almost walking. Luckily we don't have any stairs and neither will my house in the states. I can't imagine how scared you must have been or how much you had wanted to kill your hubby. On that note, poor hubby! Poor guy must have felt so bad, but these things happen. Glad that your ds wasn't hurt more than a couple of bruises.

Re: Brayden fell down a flight of stairs!
My 17 m/o tumbled down 3 brick stairs into the family room a few months ago....she was climbing and had socks on, turned to reach for the dog and her foot slipped and she tumbled down backward! She has since mastered going up and down the stairs, but ONLY with adult supervision. The baby gate into the family room only worked for a little while....she quickly learned that she can climb into the recliner, up the back of it and over into the kitchen! (the dining area overlooks the family room and she fits through the railing).
((((hugs))) It's scary that's for sure! |

Re: Brayden fell down a flight of stairs!
My Stella fell down our stairs a few months ago when she was about 23 months old. She also fell out of a grocery cart this past summer. Luckily my DH is a medical first responder. I know what you mean about slow motion. It's SO scary. It's like you're helpless. I am glad Braydon is okay!
