Re: Top ten reasons not to circumcise your son

Ok, I read through like 20 pages, and just had to comment (there's no way I'm getting through all 46 right now! )

The "but he'll look like his daddy" thing followed with "What does YOUR dad look like?" Reminded me of an interesting story. My BIL (17 at the time) needed to go into his parents room to use the bathroom (VERY common in that house). He opens the door, stands there for a second, closes the door and covers his eyes with one hand like he was going to cry. He says "I think I'm scarred for life" Turns out my FIL was spread eagle naked on his bed So it always makes me wonder how often he saw it before then DH is circ'd and and pretty much on the fence at this point if this one is a boy. He's brought up this point before (if you call it a point), so I'm gonna ask him what his dad's looks like

My DSS is also circ'd. From what I've been told (only been with DH for 3 years, we talk about other things, lol) DSS was a little over 4lbs when he was born, and was very sick. He spent about 2 weeks (maybe longer) in the NICU. By the time they brought him home, his wound had healed, so DH never had to change a bloody diaper (I saw my SIL change her son's diaper 3 days after his was cut, it was still slightly swollen and obviously tender. She was showing me how they had 'messed up' on it )

I'm expecting a full on brawl with my IL's if we ever have a boy and not circ. And now because of this thread, I have some nice hard evidence and witty comebacks () to give to them! Thanks

ETA: Our closest hospital does NOT do it. My SIL had to go to a 'specialist' to have it done, and they either paid full or half out of pocket (wasn't really an activist in anything when it was done, so I didn't ask too many questions). I'm SOO glad I'm planning on having this baby at home, if all goes right, i won't have any pressure to do anything unnecessary the first few minutes/hours/days/weeks of life

Same here, except I remember thinking at that time "Why WOULDN'T someone circ their son?!" It went no further. I didn't think about anything other than 'that's what we do, that's the norm' I'm SOOOO glad DD was a girl too!!

Re: Top ten reasons not to circumcise your son

Great thread! I didn't really know much about circumcision the first time I was pregnant but it was a girl anyway. DH is from Mexico where no one circs anyway so we wouldn't have gotten it done.

I remember my brother coming to visit me in the hospital when my daughter was born and his son was 4 months old and he said "You're so lucky you didn't have to get her circumcized! Gage (his son) would scream bloody murder every time he peed!" and I thought "Well you didn't HAVE to have him circumcised!" but I didn't say it since I didn't know much about it at the time. I did research it after that and realized how barbaric it is and now DH and I are passionate intactivists. I mentioned it to my SIL since she is TTC#2 and I didn't want him to go through the same agony... and she has decided she is never speaking to me again. :-/

Re: Top ten reasons not to circumcise your son

Glad this was bumped....I read the 1st 10 pages and got sad at some of the attacks . My 1st 2 are circ'd, then next 2 intact. I have guilt for circ-ing them....it was over 15 yrs ago, but I didn't want to do it in the 1st place, but went along with my Xh's wishes. With this pregnancy, I was telling DH about circ and why I didn't agree with it, and the boys were listening and I apologized to the older 2 for letting it be done to them.
One thing that really brought it home for me was seeing cliterectomies on Oprah or something one year and when people would refer to ALL their children as *intact*, including the girls....yeah, I wouldn't mutilate my daughters, so why did I let it happen to my sons .
I am so glad there is a LOT of research in the mainstream out there now that wasn't that available years ago....back then, myself and my friends who read "Mothering" mag were the only ones who even questioned it.
