Watch his distress level-- outside in the cool air (bundled up of course) or steam in the bathroom can help.

Sounds like croup to me too. We just had that same thing. When he was breathing, he sounded like a seal. He ran fever, he hacked, he was miserable. But he finally got better.

We did have a whooping cough outbreak here last winter though...

Our DD had whooping cough a couple months ago and is still getting over it currently.

Her cough was similar to what you are describing but hers would end in extreme vomiting which is one sure sign of whooping cough.

She still has her cough now, although not as bad thank goodness, but it is known as the 100 day cough.

Unfortunately there is not a lot they can do for whooping cough, mind you our DD was a couple months older than yours she was 13 months when she got it.

The cough was her only symptom totally nothing else and nothing else before the cough arrived just all of a sudden she was having extreme coughing fits and coughing to throwing up about 25 times a day and night.

Her DR put her on an inhaler and it does help because when she coughs she cannot breathe.

I don't know if your son has whooping cough it is really hard to diagnose and get diagnosed so if you think he has it I would just take him back to your DR and have him checked out.

Hope he starts to feel better.
