the eye goop they give newborns- yea or nay and why?

I hate that stuff, and I am told it is only for if you have an STD (I don't)- but they do it on EVERY baby "just in case".

Can someone explain to me the point of this and give me some arguments either way?

I hate it. I think it's unnecessary. You get a pap for STD's when you are pregnant. If you are in a committed relationship then you have no reason to use it. It also hinders bonding in my opinion. I don't agree with using anti-biotics "just in case" so I refused it.

It's a CYA for the hospital. The MW gave me the tube to use on DD#2, and I just never used it. I wanted her to be able to see us as clearly as a newborn can, and I knew there was zero chance of any STDs being involved. I also happen to agree with PP about using antibiotics when there isn't an infection present.

and it is absolutely unnecessary, and isnt proven not harmful in newborns with no reason to have it, and even when the mom does have an std sometimes isnt useful, especially since a lot of stds are viral which its going to have no effect on anyway, and yet still has the potential risks of an antibiotic.

oh and some places still use silver nitrate which can burn you if you touch it and yet its "perfectly safe" to put in a brand new babes eyes? i cant see that making any sort of sense!

i agree with the ppers we did not have it used on our DD and will not have it used on our DS.
If you are in CA (we lived there at the time) you just have to sign somthing saying you dont want it Not a big deal at all.

My midwifes assistant has actually put the stuff in her own eyes (I've forgotten why) and says it doesn't hurt in the least. My midwife is big for it and says it's not just for STDs, but just a little extra measure to prevent infection in vulnerable newborns. Makes vision slightly blurry but not bad and not for long. HTH

It may not be law. If you are having a hospital birth they may give you flack for it. It all depends on your doctors and such. I never had a problem refusing it when I had my 1st DS in the hospital but some do.

Re: the eye goop they give newborns- yea or nay and why?

I've delivered in the hospital 4 of my 6 births. First time, they refused to let me refuse. Second time, I got it off the baby before she opened her eyes. The last 2 ties, I refused the ointment and there was no hassle given. They just had us sign AMA paperwork and left us alone.

The only purpose of the eye ointment is that if the mother has clamydia the newborn can get it in their eyes as they are born and can go blind. There is NO other reason for the eye ointment in the least. For certain populations, the eye ointment is extremely important to protect the newborn. In other populations its not only pointless but insulting.
