Potty chair vs. potty insert for big toilet

Which did you use/prefer when potty training your LO?

DS is almost 16 months old and i'm sure, far from potty training. But he's started holding his urine for a few hours at a time, and i'm wondering if getting him use to a potty soon would be a good idea.

Some people in my mom's group swear by just using an insert in the big toilet, others like potty seats that their LO can climb on themselves. We're moving in 1.5 weeks, and i'd like to get SOMETHING for the bathroom, to either sit him on occasionally, or just to get him used to it being there.

What do you think?

Get a potty chair that converts to be used on the regular toilet seat.

got it at target for $17, it comes apart and the top half fits right on the toilet, the bottom coverts into a step stool, we like it alot.

We've used both and MUCH preferred the insert on the regular seat, with a step stool. The potty chair was a pain to keep clean, was always in the way and was used to 'store' toys which grossed me out.

I've always just used a seat that fits on the regular toilet. I am too lazy to clean something else several times a day.

DS liked the potty chair until my sister got him one that sang when you used it...it absolutely terrified him and he would never go near a potty chair after that We have both the insert & chair available in the bathroom for DD who is occasionally wanting to try to use the potty and she seems to prefer the insert....the potty chair is one that can be used as a step stool and she only stands on it.

At first I bought the insert that goes on top of the potty, but DD was absolutely and utterly TERRIFIED of climbing onto the "big potty" so that was a no-go.

Then, we bought a little potty. She thought it was a blast to sit on, but screamed and cried if she was asked to actually use it to pee in.

So, we aren't ready for PL'ing just yet - but now we have both on hand and ready!

I prefer the little potty, but a one-piece one like the Ikea potties. We have the seat that goes on the big toilet, but DS somehow manages to get pee between the potty seat and the regular seat and I have no idea why it happens. He does better straddling the regular toilet, then his parts hang into the bowl and there's no mess.

We have both, and DD much prefers to go on the big potty. Actually, she pushes her potty chair over to the toilet, uses it for a step stool and then sits down...so I guess at least we are getting our $ out of both
